CONVERSATIONS from the POINTED FIRS

Invoking the spirit of place as seen through conversations with some of Maine’s most creative cultural observers: it's artists, authors and exemplars..

What is Maine? Who is Maine? What have been the stories of those who have lived here from the beginning, have migrated here, and continue to inhabit this unique place caught in geological and sociological time between air, land, and sea? How do we know where we live?

In early 2021 Leete’s Island Books launched a monthly series of conversations with Maine-connected authors and artists about new books and creative projects that invoke the spirit of Maine, its history, its ecology, its culture, and its contribution to community and quality of life.

Conversations from the Pointed Firs is a monthly interview-style podcast wherein Peter Neill talks with authors and artists who live in Maine, work in Maine, or otherwise derive their creativity from the essence of Maine.

The program airs monthly on WERU-FM Community Radio in Orland, Maine and is available on Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, and wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. Discussions will revolve around questions designed to invoke the authors’ historical connection to Maine; the inspiration derived from Maine’s landscape, history, people, and quality of life; specific challenges and outcomes faced in the making of recently published works; and personal anecdotes and experiences that infuse their writings with the essence of Maine.

As with The Country of the Pointed Firs, the classic fictional portrait of 19th century Maine life by Sarah Orne Jewett, Conversations from the Pointed Firs will focus on the culture of Maine as seen through its most creative observers and their evocations of its spirit of place.
