This month on Conversations From The Pointed Firs, host Peter Neill speaks with Daniel Bartlett, the current Grand Secretary and former Grand Master of the Free Masons of Maine, and historian of the Masonic movement in the State, an organization that contributes to many often-unknown activities, grants, and programs that accrue to the social benefit of our communities large and small. The Free Masons of Maine is a civic society that quietly applies traditional values to civic engagement and public service. It is a complicated and often misunderstood organization, with a long history and widespread influence across the state.

Daniel Bartlett bio

Daniel Bartlett was raised in Central Massachusetts where his work took him from dairy farm to plastics manufacturing plant to the US Coast Guard. For the next 22 years he served various units cutters, search and rescue stations, support bases, a marine safety unit and a light house. After retirement he worked for Hinckley Yacht Service in Southwest Harbor as a Systems Technician. His time with the Free Masons of Maine began in Tremont Lodge #77 in Southwest Harbor. He served as Worshipful Master in 2007 and 2008; President of the 21st District Officer’s Association; was appointed by M.W. Brother A. James Ross as District Deputy Grand Master of the 21st Masonic District from 2012 to 2014, and Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Maine from 2016 to 2020. He is also a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Bangor and the York Rite bodies. Dan has also been a member for many years of the U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer’s Association. Dan was elected and installed Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Maine in May 2020. He and his wife Susan are proud of their extended family, and call Bucksport home.
